The Late Loria Subgenre Boom by: thecoolkid26 Genre: Lorias (and its variations) Notable: Precursor to Warlords, Precursor to Civilizations Boom, beginning of the end for DF RPs Game Creators: dylan34481, Err0r77, SludsXD, and many others Time Period: October 2018-??? Table of Contents Early Loria Boom...........4 The Decline.........................8 Legacy................................12 Chapter 1 - Early Loria Boom The height of DF RPs would be known as the Early Loria Subgenre Boom, or shortened to the Early Loria Boom. It'd be the height of RP popularity, and generally considered as the height of the quality of games on DF. Such popularity came with its positives, such as the spread of a new form of games on DF that didn't need code, and expanded creativity. Players would be able to find out about a type of game they would've never otherwise even thought about, and others would contribute their ideas, increasing the overall diversity of RPs across the server. It did come with its flaws, though, and the main issue was that the oversaturation of games had led to resistance to the genre, slowly forming since the Early Loria Boom. The Late Loria Boom is considered to begin in an undefined point where Lorias began to decline, and is characterized by the exponentially increasing opposition to the RP genre. It was not a great time for RPs, but it was the precursor for some critical events for the genre's survival. Chapter 2 - The Decline The Late Loria Boom was not the time of pride that its precursor had been. While games were still being made, more and more people would begin to criticize the genre, whether reasonably or not, and less people would stop making games either because of this resistance, boredom to RPs, inactivity on the server, or a mix of the three, a trend that would continue in the subsequent Civilizations Boom. New ideas never really took off at this point, and the genre mostly latched onto the ideas made in the Early Loria Boom, further increasing the boredom that drew people away. That really was what the 'boom' was - a steady decline that would prove that RPs on the server were never meant to last. Perhaps things weren't so bad, though, because the main reason this boom is known today is for what it started. Chapter 3 - Legacy Two major things came out of this boom. First, dylan34481 had decided to make his first serious game - one called Fuhrerreich, which would take place in a post-WW2 world, where Germany and the Axis Powers had won. thecoolkid26 had learnt how to use Schematica, and was able to make dylan34481 a blank world map. However, the largest plots on DF were 300x300, and this schematic would not even fit in 10 of those. Calls for a server for RPs had been going for a while now, at least since the days of the Early Loria Boom, and the idea may have come before that, but this event would be the catalyst for what is now Warlords. dylan34481 got a free server on "Server Pro" and, on a flat world, Warlords was born. thecoolkid26 worked on the schematic for Fuhrerreich, and the Warlords Exodus began. This was an event where many of RPs greatest creators would move to Warlords and cease most activity on DF. The Warlords Exodus was especially pushed by the resistance to RPs, which ironically meant that the opposition to RPs led to its development. No longer limited by plot sizes or by server rules, or by a community which opposed them, RPs finally had a base to develop and flourish on. Secondly, SludsXD would make his new game, "Civilizations" around this time period. While Civilizations is anything but a Loria game, he had received inspiration from both the Early and Late Loria Booms to make a game of his own. His game would spark the last major boom in DF, the Civilizations Boom, which was more popular than the Late Loria Boom itself. This Boom saw many of the same issues the Late Loria Boom did, and would be the last sign of what it would take for an RP to be popular in DF, as the structure of Civilizations games is significantly different from both any other DF game and Warlords game in terms of their pace. Unfortunately, the Late Loria Boom would come to an end. There is no set date on its end, but there are several dates that could mark its end, and you can decide between them: Late October - Warlords Exodus begins November - Civilizations Boom begins Late 2018/Early 2019 - Belloria officially dies out 2019 - Err0r77's RPs end (Err0r77 is considered the last creator from the Loria Booms. CookieQ followed on his knowledge, but she was not involved in creating any games in the Late Loria Boom.) While Err0r77's RPs extended not only during the Civilizations Boom, but also shortly during the Dark Age, all of these dates can be considered the end. Whatever the case, the Late Loria Boom is definitely over. It truly did mark the end of DF RPs, and also the split between Warlords and DF RPs. In fact, if you look closely, you can see that this divide is a lot more significant than you'd initially think. Warlords today is based off of the Loria Booms. While also having Afterlife and Developmental games, the most popular of the 3 types of RPs is Lorias, and this is because the Late Loria Boom created Warlords. We've kept the same mindset we've had in DF, and simply improved on what the Loria Booms left for us. An idea I already covered in the Civilizations Boom, on the other hand, is that DF players are naturally inclined to simple, fast paced games. The diversion is here. SludsXD cleverly made a game that caters to this fast paced style - Civilizations. Err0r77's Lorias were also fast paced compared to other games, and would never stretch beyond a few days. The whole concept of an AFOW that CookieQ had made was obviously never meant to stretch on for more than a day. It wouldn't really work. This means that we see two different ideals that were made because of how the servers are structured. Players on Warlords are typically more active and less busy than players on DF, as a result you'll see slow but higher quality games on Warlords. DF players are less active and have less time to spend on RPs, by far. As a result, you see fast paced games and, although low quality, they worked. That is, until the Dark Ages. Perhaps the end of RPs in DF is proof that the DF model of RPs after the Late Loria Boom was ineffective, and that the Warlords model is possibly correct? I'm getting really ahead of myself here. Anyways, the Late Loria Boom ended DF RPs as we know them, and once the Civilizations Boom ended, DF RPs as a whole were doomed to fail.
